The oil and gas market is continually facing challenges to reduce costs for production and intervention subsea control systems.

To support this, we have developed subsea control equipment and a range of cost-effective hardware and software solutions for subsea production and intervention equipment.

One of our most recent solutions is a high-integrity pressure protection system (HIPPS) that considers harsh environments and demands for safety and availability to provide a SIL2 capable subsea control module (SCM).

The SCM is designed to operate in subsea conditions at a depth of 120 m, while providing protection of the wellhead flowlines, using API 17F and ISO 13628-6 qualified safety controllers. The design package is specifically tailored to enable installation within the physical limitations of the existing subsea structure.

The SCM houses the subsea electronics module (SEM), hydraulics and diver mateable electrical and hydraulic connectors. It is capable of interfacing with the client’s existing installed ageing subsea infrastructure and communications and power systems. The SCM communicates via a surface mounted communications gateway and safety interface providing connectivity to the platform control and safety systems.

The challenge

To meet the demands and quality, we invested in the enhancement of our production facilities to offer an expanded range of low-cost, high availability equipment for demanding applications.

We completed significant research and development for a provision of several SEMs that operated in water depths of 3 km for intervention tooling. The modules use best-in-class commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) equipment and purposely designed hardware and software with equipment that is not readily available on the open market.

The project included design, assembly, hardware integration testing, environmental stress screening (ESS) and qualification activities to meet the API 17F and ISO 13628-6 standards.

Conclusion

We can supply drop-in replacement topsides and subsea control equipment that is backwards compatible with legacy OEM systems, together with all aspects of procurement, installation, commissioning and field support.

Our skills and experience include a range of control and safety systems and specialist sector knowledge. We apply these expertise to our equipment designs and where necessary to other manufacturers’ equipment.

We provide non-OEM support for legacy subsea production and intervention control systems, including

  • master control station (MCS)
  • electrical power unit (EPU)
  • hydraulic power unit (HPU)
  • intervention workover control system (IWOCS)

All aspects of the work, including electrical, electronic, mechanical, hydraulic and software were undertaken in the UK.
