Controlling and safely keeping assets deep underwater with subsea control modules

The oil and gas market is continually facing challenges in reducing costs for producing and maintaining subsea control systems. Proeon’s solutions include developing a range of cost-effective hardware and software tools for comprehensive testing, upgrades and deployment of the key components of subsea production and intervention equipment.

High integrity pressure protection systems

One of our recent solutions is a high integrity pressure protection system (HIPPS). It considers the harsh environment and client demands for safety and availability to provide a SIL2 capable subsea control module (SCM). The module, a pressure balanced environmental enclosure, houses the subsea electrical module (SEM), hydraulics and diver mateable electrical and hydraulic connectors and can interact with ageing subsea infrastructure and communications systems. The SCM communicates via a surface-mounted communications gateway and safety interface that connects to the platform control and safety systems.

The SCM is designed to operate in subsea conditions at a depth of 120 m, protecting the wellhead flowlines using API 17F and ISO 13628-6 qualified safety controllers. The design package is specifically tailored to enable installation in the physical limitations of the subsea structure.

Committed to excellence and innovation

Our reputation for engineering excellence meant that we completed significant research and development work, resulting in the provision of various SEMs operating at water depths in excess of 3 km for intervention tooling. The project included assembly, hardware integration testing, environmental stress screening (ESS) and qualification to the API 17F and ISO 13628-6 standards.

To ensure we provide the quality needed of these systems, we invested in enhancing our production facilities, enabling us to provide an expanded range of low-cost, high-availability equipment for demanding applications.

We have built a reputation for providing high-quality systems, designed to the highest standards with accredited quality, health and safety, environmental and information security management systems.

Where necessary, we can supply drop-in replacement topsides and subsea control equipment that is backwards compatible with legacy OEM systems, including all aspects of procurement, installation, commissioning and field support. We can apply this expertise to our equipment designs and where necessary, to other manufacturers’ equipment.

Non-OEM support for legacy subsea production and intervention control systems

  • SCM and SEM
  • master control station (MCS)
  • electrical power unit (EPU)
  • hydraulic power unit (HPU)
  • intervention workover control system (IWOCS).

All aspects of the work, including electrical, electronic, mechanical, hydraulic and software, is undertaken in the UK.
